Undergraduate academic requirements

Applicants to bachelor’s degree programs must have obtained a secondary school diploma. This diploma must be eligible to access further academic studies in the country where it has been obtained.

English requirements

  • Cambridge English - Advanced: Minimum score of 180 with no band lower than 170.
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Minimum score of 70 with no sub-score below 60.
  • Duolingo English Test (DET): Minimum score of 110 (Education and Nursing programs require a total score of 120).
  • IELTS: Overall score of 6.5 with no sub-score less than 6.0 (Education and Nursing programs require an overall score of 7.0).
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum score of 58
  • TOEFL: Internet-based test (iBT) with a total score of 83 (Education and Nursing programs require a total score of 87), and minimum scaled scores of Listening

English proficiency waivers

The English language test requirement can be waived by one of the following criteria:

  • Your first language is English; OR
  • You have completed at least three years of formal, full-time study (no less than three courses per semester) at a secondary or post-secondary institution where the language of instruction and examination is English. Note

    The minimum three-year requirement does not include time enrolled in an English as a Second Language program.

Global Leadership Award (application-based)

If you are an international secondary-school student entering an undergraduate program at the university on a study permit and are currently studying outside of Canada, you can apply for the university's Global Leadership Award (GLA).

The GLA is one of our most prestigious entrance awards. Valued at $72,000 CAD ($18,000 a year for four years), the GLA recognizes international secondary school applicants with strong academic and leadership abilities. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are not eligible for the GLA.

International Leaders Award (ILA)

If you are an international secondary school student entering an undergraduate program at the university on a study permit and are currently studying outside of Canada, you may be eligible for the ILA.

The ILA is an entrance award that recognizes high-achieving international students entering an undergraduate program at Ontario Tech University for September 2023 intake. Valued at $10,000 CAD, this one-year scholarship will be awarded to eligible students that have applied for the Global Leadership Award. A maximum of five will be awarded.

International Merit Awards

If you are an international secondary school student entering an undergraduate program at the university on a study permit and are currently studying outside of Canada, you may be eligible for one of the university's Merit Awards.

International Merit Awards—valued at up to $4,000 CAD—are automatically awarded to the top applicants with the highest admission grade-point-average from each of the identified regions. The Merit Awards are non-renewable.

In-course scholarships

If you have achieved a minimum 3.7 GPA (on a 4.3 scale) during the previous year and you are returning to full-time study, you will be automatically awarded a scholarship.

  • 4.0+ GPA: $1,500
  • 3.7 - 3.99 GPA: $1,000

These scholarships may be increased to $3,000 and $4,000 through generous contributions from our donors.

  • Please note: In-course scholarships are available for up to three years of your first undergraduate degree. To be considered, you must have been enrolled in a minimum 80 per cent course load during your previous academic year.
