The cost of studying in India can vary depending on the degree you want to study, and the university you choose. However, on the whole tuition costs in India are much lower than many other countries, with costs around $5,000 or less per year quite common.

Where you choose to study in India will have a huge influence on your student experience. The big cities like Delhi and Mumbai are home to many of India’s universities, including the most prestigious and highly ranked.

What are the requirements to study in India?


All programs and universities in India have different entry requirements you’ll need to meet in order to be accepted. As a minimum, you’ll need to have successfully completed secondary education in your home country to study as an undergraduate, or hold a degree to study at postgraduate level. Make sure you check with the Admissions Department of your chosen university to find out exactly what the entrance requirements are for the program you’re applying for.

English language tests

To study on an English-led program in India, you’ll need to prove your English proficiency as part of your application. Most universities accept results from a language test like TOEFL or IELTS. What score you’ll need will depend on the university and program, so check first to find out which test they accept and what score you’ll need.

India student visa

Before you can travel to study in India, you’ll need a valid student visa. You should contact your local Indian embassy or consulate in your home country to start your application once you’re university application has been accepted.

You will need to submit several documents to the embassy for them to process your visa application, including an application form, copies of your passport and a letter of acceptance from your university.

How to study in India

  1. Find the university you want to study at in India, and choose a program
  2. Complete the application form with your personal information and academic background
  3. Gather required documents including English proficiency test results, academic transcripts and proof of finances
  4. Send the completed application form and copies of requested documents via email
  5. Send a hard copy of the application form and required documents in a sealed envelope to the university
  6. Accept your offer when received and pay any fees necessary to secure your place
  7. Apply for an India student visa by contacting your local Indian embassy or consulate
