What Ulster University says about their program:
Product Design provides a stimulating and challenging practice-based education within a multidisciplinary studio environment for those from an Art & Design, or Technology with Design background. The course will prepare you for a career in areas such as Product Design, Ceramics, Silversmithing & Jewellery, Industrial Design, Spatial Design, Furniture Design, Lighting Design, or as a Designer Maker of bespoke one-off items.
The course provides stimulating and challenging practice-based education for the designer with fabricating and prototyping at the core of the curriculum. State-of-the-art ceramics, plaster, metal, silversmithing & jewellery, wood and 3D printing workshops with full technical support from dedicated specialist technical staff offer facilities for fabrication and manipulation of soft and hard materials, as well as applied skills for metal and plastics. The course is across two floors of the Belfast School of Art, in close proximity to the above workshops, allowing for interaction and cross-overs of ideas, materials and expertise. "Product Design, Ceramics, Silversmithing & Jewellery are the course pathways comprising user-centered design and design through making strands.
Students learn the core processes in design; research, idea development, prototyping, making, testing, and develop an in-depth understanding of materials through practical experimentation in ceramics, wood, metal, fine metal, plastics and composites.
Students are introduced to manufacturing processes through live client briefs; design intent, commercial, societal, and industrial considerations. An introduction to visual communication, graphic design, 3D CAD, CAM, 3D Printing, information design, and presentation techniques help develop student's design methodologies and communication skills."
