Political science is the study of governmental practices, politics and theories. Coursework in the BA program in political science covers American institutions, international relations, political theory and world affairs.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate academic requirements

  • First-year students must have a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) (a "B" or better where "A"=4.00) from a secondary school.
  • Must have three years of high school work (If you are currently in high school, ASU needs to see 9–11 grade work. If you have completed high school then ASU needs to see 10–12 grade work).
  • Must have and present a completed high school diploma or certificate.

International students who completed high school outside the U.S. are required to meet the following competency requirements:

  • Math

    four years (algebra I, geometry, algebra II and one-course requiring algebra II as a prerequisite).

  • Laboratory science

    three years total (one year each from any of the following areas is accepted: biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences and physics).

International students who attended four years of high school in the U.S. must meet the competency requirements.

Degrees with higher minimum grades

  • Bachelor of Science majors in W. P. Carey School of Business GPA 3.60 OR top 8% of high school class OR SAT/ACT exam
  • BSN Nursing GPA 3.30 OR graduate in the top 25% of high school class

Pathway Programs

  • Entry to 3-semester pathway program

    completion of high school with GPA 2.50 or top 35% of high school class

  • Entry to 1-semester pathway program

    completion of high school with GPA 2.75 and no mathematics competency deficiencies

Postgraduate academic requirements

  • To be admitted to ASU, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from an international institution that is officially recognized by that country.

  • Competitive applicants typically have a “B” (3.00 on a 4.00 scale) grade point average in the last 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of undergraduate coursework. If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, your application may still be considered by the department.

ASU scholarships help a greater number of academically qualified students graduate. You are automatically considered for merit-based partial tuition scholarships during your application for admission, and there are also scholarships that master’s-level applicants can apply for separately.
