What is the cost of studying in Cyprus?

Tuition fees in Cyprus tend to be lower than the UK or US, and you could expect to pay between $10,000 and $15,000 per year for a bachelor’s program.

The cost of living in Cyprus varies depending on where on the island you’re studying, for example the capital Nicosia tends to be more expensive than other small towns. Overall the cost of living is on a par with the rest of Europe, and you may need to budget around $12,000 a year.

Where can you study in Cyprus?

The capital Nicosia is a popular destination for international students, and is home to some of Cyprus’s biggest universities. It offers students a vibrant social scene, and is a cultural hub with numerous museums, galleries and theaters.

There’s also the option to study by the sea on the north coast in the harbor city of Kyrenia, or the ancient city of Limassol on the south coast of the island.

What are the requirements to study in Cyprus?

Qualifications

You’ll probably need a high school education or equivalent to apply as an undergraduate in Cyprus. There may also be specific entry requirements for each university or program, so check what these are before you apply. The majority of programs in Cyprus are taught in Turkish, or Greek, but an increasing number of universities offer English as the language of instruction. Before enrollment universities require proof of competency, but students without adequate English levels may be offered one month’s intensive language tuition.

English language tests

If you want to study one of the growing number of programs taught in English, you may need to prove your English language proficiency when you apply. Check with the university when you apply to find out whether you need to have completed a TOEFL or IELTS certification, and what score you need to have.

Cyprus student visa

Students from outside the EU require a visa to study in Cyprus and these will only be given to full-time students with at least 12 credits per semester.

Visa applications should be made to the Cypriot embassy in your home country two or three months before the program starts. You’ll also need to attend a visa interview where you’ll need to present documentation including evidence of a medical check-up and evidence of sufficient finances to support yourself during your studies.

Non-EU students must also register with the District Police Alien Branch within seven days of arrival in Cyprus.
