Locals have a very good level of English but it is better to learn to speak Dutch. From Ghent you can discover a lot of places in Belgium within a couple of hours or less, such as Brussels, Bruges, Oostende and Lille in France. Travel inspiration can be found on the SNCB website.

The trains are amazing, it’s so easy to travel from one city to the other and so cheap if your are under certain age, during holidays there’s even an option to have unlimited trips for a week or month, so it’s really simple and cheap to travel around Belgium as a young student, and see all the beautiful sights and places this country has. Locals tend to be friendly and really helpful, I always say Belgians are the nicest Europeans.

Belgium is a nice country. Good social security, sometimes you meet nice people and you never run out of ideas on fun things to do or places to visit but the downside of Belgium is that it has rubbish weather.

Locals are open-minded and nice, even though it might not seem this way, just start talking to them :) Basically, everyone speaks English, which is very important for international students. Ghent has very good connections with the Netherlands, France, Germany and Luxemburg - to all these places you can go with Flixbus, which is very handy. Finally, trains are very cheap for students, so you can travel around Belgium easily and budget friendly.
