Neuroscience degrees abroad

Neuroscience is the study of nervous systems and the functioning of the human brain. How the brain works is one of the biggest and most daunting questions we face, and as a neuroscience graduate you could help develop our understanding of one of the most complex systems evolution has created.

Neuroscience makes an important contribution to the understanding and treatment of mental and other neurological disorders, and it covers a wide range of areas including biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy and pharmacology.

Degree programs in neuroscience are offered by universities, colleges and medical schools all over the world. Studying abroad means you will have a much wider choice of programs, and you could take advantage of facilities and technology that might not be available at home. It’s also a great way to broaden your personal horizons while earning a world-class education.

Neuroscience program structure

It’s possible to study neuroscience abroad at different degree levels including bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. At bachelor’s level, neuroscience degrees are offered as a BSc and can take three or four years to complete, depending on where you study.

You can study for a master’s degree as an MSc if you already hold a bachelor’s, or some universities offer an MSci, which is taught over four or five years. This gives you the option of adding an extra year to your bachelor’s program to convert it to a master’s level degree.

If you have your master’s and want to continue your neuroscience studies and earn a doctorate, many universities offer PhD or MPhil research degrees, which you can study over two to five years.

Most neuroscience programs will be taught through a combination of laboratory sessions, lectures, seminars, tutorials and independent work. Each module will have different assessment methods, but most will consist of written coursework and exams, with a research dissertation in your final year.

The exact neuroscience program structure and content will differ between each university, but there are some common modules and subjects you can expect to cover, including:

  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular biology
  • Psychology and the brain
  • Research methods and statistics
  • Neuroanatomy
  • Pharmacology
  • Genetics and evolution
  • Developmental biology
  • Techniques in neuroscience
